10 practical New Year's Resolutions for 2012 - Change your life forever
76
Popular New Year's Resolutions generally revolve around cliché commitments like saving money, being healthy, managing time better, being successful, getting a job and so on. Let's forget all that jazz for a moment and focus on real life commitments, goals and promises that will change your life forever. Here are top 10 very practical New Year's Resolutions for 2012 that will rock your world, literally!
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Save money to spend it on a big purchase
Wondering why we are talking about saving and spending at the same time? The reason is quite simple and practical. If you plan to make a big purchase by say, mid 2012, you will start saving and managing your income as early as possible. Whether that big purchase is buying a house, refurbishing your current house, a car or some such, it will give you a financial goal which you can actively work to achieve.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Don't be taken for granted
This is going to be a tough New Year's Resolution to maintain because this is partly going to depend on how people behave with you, whether at school, college or work. There will always be someone who will take your niceness for granted and make you put in undue efforts into something that is not your domain all together. Remind yourself that you will not be taken for granted in 2012.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Quit smoking and other addictions
We can go on and on talking about quitting the many addictions teenagers and adults alike have. In tune with being practical, let's focus on quitting one of the deadliest and costliest of your addictions at the onset of this new year. Come 2012, promise yourself that you will quit the butt whether it is cold turkey or by a gradual reduction plan. If you smoke a packet or two of cigarettes a week, you could end up saving more than a thousand dollars every year. Add to this, the cost of a sudden spike in smoking when you drink, the cost of lighters and everything else, you will save a significant amount of money the very minute you stop smoking.
Oh no, we're not done yet. Add to this the massive financial costs and burden you will impose on yourself and your family many years down the line when you suffer from smoking related diseases. You may be sitting in that hospital bed being looked after, but your family members will be out there working overtime to support your rising medical bills. Did we even talk about the emotional and mental trauma that you will be putting your family through? If you still haven't got the point, think of how much physical and mental suffering you will go through. It is never too late to quit, and the year 2012 seems like a perfect fit for you to quit this nasty habit of yours.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Make an active effort to connect with family
Do you still maintain a strong connection or bond with your immediate and distant family? If you don't, there is no better time than now to start taking steps to connect with your family members. Life is all about sharing love and smiles with your near and dear ones, and remember folks, family comes first! Be the bigger person and go forward with your attempts at reconnecting with your estranged family members. This is one New Year's Resolution that will pay back dividends for a lifetime.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Stay fit by simply being active
No, this is not about counting calories in every meal nor is it about weighing yourself every other week. Forget the intricacies and let's focus on the practical New Year's Resolution of simply being more active on a day to day basis. Walk to the supermarket, take the stairs wherever possible, cook fresh meals, play casual and non-competitive team sports with friends, go more often on a weekend away or quite outdoor picnic – The key is to stay fit by staying active without turning into a gym freak or an annoying person who counts calories at the restaurant table.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Stop fighting with your partner girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband or partner
As silly as it sounds to include this in our list of New Year's Resolutions that will change your life, it is absolutely necessary. You may not realize the gravity of this right now, but a few years later you will only smack yourself back in the head for wasting the precious moments you had with your partner. Time flies, and so does age. You will never ever find yourself in the same physical shape and fitness that you are right now, 5 years later. Make the most of it and spend more time in 2012 cuddling and doing other romantic things with your partner rather than argue and bicker over silly and trivial issues.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Make better decisions
This is not some kind of principle from a management book. We are referring to developing the art of making better decisions in each and every walk of life, whether it is at work, school, college, home or in relationships. Do you know why? Because bad decisions will come back and haunt you later in life! Every time you have to make a decision about even the most miniscule of things, ask yourself "What repercussions can this decision have?" By doing so, you will eliminate substantial risk of making wrong decisions on a daily basis. While this may seem like a tedious thing to do in the beginning, it will only be a matter of time before this New Year's Resolution fit in seamlessly in your personality.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Stop complaining about how you've got less than what you deserve
Around the world, women are being raped as you read this. Children are starving to death as you read this. People are dying for the cause of freedom and democracy of their countries as you read this. People are sleeping on the streets in winter as we read this. Someone's taking a day long trek under the harsh sun just to get a pot full of water, that too contaminated, as you read this. Children are being born blind and with other fatal diseases as you read this. Poverty is causing deaths due to hunger, malnutrition and health care as you read this. Children and minors are being forced into begging, child slavery and even prostitution this very second.
If you are reading this from the comfort of your home on your computer or a handheld device, consider yourself to be lucky to be blessed with the means to do so. Promise yourself that 2012 will be less about complaining and whinging, and more about doing the things that you ought to be doing.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Stop procrastinating
We often hear people saying "To stop wasting time is my New Year's Resolution" or "I'm going to be more effective and efficient in the new year" But what do these fancy words 'effective' and 'efficient' mean when it comes to real life scenarios? How are you going to actually stop wasting time? All self help gurus will give you sophisticated, or should we say complicated answers that lead to one simple change that you need to make – Stop procrastinating. Learn how to stop procrastination and make it a daily habit in 2012. You will be amazed at how much spare time on hand you will have to do what you love, rather than worry about the piles of unfinished chores, studying or work related tasks.
New Year's Resolution for 2012 - Fight for what you think is right
Every single famous and successful individual in the world is where he/she is at the moment, only because they fought for what they thought was right including the likes of Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Adolf Hitler, Barack Obama, Justin Bieber, Madonna, Abraham Lincoln and so on. Whether what they actually did was morally and socially acceptable or not is a separate debate. These gunners stuck at what they did best and believed in their own fight at surviving and succeeding. What's your fight going to be in 2012?

Really great resolutions. I particularly like the one of stop complaining. It ties in nicely with live in gratitude which I strongly believe in. Very thoughtful hub.
All good resolutions!Great hub
Awesome, very good resolutions.
Very nice resolutions. I agree with cyndi10 - on "stop complaining". I saw a thought provoking email of pictures from the 1930's and 1940's during the depression. If we all think we have it tough now, just try to imagine what it was like back then...we take so much for granted now!
Great hub! These are all great ideas that we should all do on a daily basis. Voted up!
Good sensible resolutions. Voted USEFUL and INTERESTING! Thanks for bringing them to our focus.
These are all really important things to remember as we start the new year. Thankfully a few of these I don't have to worry about but there are a couple on that list (like get moving a little more and stop procrastinating)! Thanks for the great reminders and I'll be sharing this one!
I've never kept New Year's Resolutions. As a result, I try to avoid making goals that have to start at the new year.
Great hub with some good advice. I enjoy your style of writing. Thanks for sharing this.
Voted up, useful and interesting.
My biggest one is probably about being taken for granted. Codependency is something I definitely need to work on this year! Nice hub
Great resolutions! Even taking on one or two of these can make a huge difference in anyone's life.
A very idealistic approach, maybe that's the reason they feature under "New year resolutions" LOL
Great hub.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLJDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDd
Excellent resolutions, well worth the effort. don't forget it only takes 21 repetitions for something to become a habit. Thanks for the advice! :)
BEE YOU TI FULL!!! Love this hub. Seriously. I don't know what else to say, except that you did a great job and I'm inspired.
Fabulous ideas! My goals are entirely different, but if I bet these are some of the most successful, most productive objectives one could make for the year!
This is a great hub! I could definitely use some of these resolutions to benefit my life in 2012. After the new year, you could rename this hub and it would still be useful to people who want to set goals and live better lives. Awesome work! Voted up, useful, etc.
Excellent New Years resolution ideas... I'm especially going to work on #4, I have lost touch with some of the people on my dad's side of my family... I reconnected with one recently, so I hope to stay in better touch with him.
Great ideas. I can see the need for several of these in my life - with consistency.
Great hub, voted this up princesswithpen, thanks for this sharing and I love that stop fighting with your partner which most of the people tend to overlook this as a resolution...great job!
Simple yet great ideas for 2012 resolution.. Stop fighting with partner is definitely a 'Must Do' resolution for everyone. Great Hub
Had to vote this hub up, PwaP-GREAT list of reminders here. It certainly deserved to be highlighted in this weeks HP newsletter as a 'recommended read'. I'll be bookmarking this one to gently remind myself of these important topics.
Those are all practical and affordable resolutions. I was blessed to have my grandmother for most of my life. She died at the age of 98. Before her death, she and her brother told us about their childhood and traveling between Oklahoma Terretory and Texas with Indians shadowing them. People today think they have it rough if they cannot have the latest technology but if it wasn't for those who came before us, we wouldn't have this technology. My mom and dad both lived during the depression and from the time they could walk they were working to help the family in some way. Kids today do not want to do chores, they feel they are entitled to an allowance and all the cool toys reguardless of the cost.
I have another resolution to add to this list
New Year Resolution for 2012 - Depend on the most important technology ever invented - your brain - and the electronic technology less. The electronic technology, after all, was invented by someone using their brain.
This is my busiest time of the year! Helping People quit smoking. Well, actually they usually come to me around Jan 15 when they realize that they need a little bit more help with their new years resolution.
I think resolutions are good no matter what they are. My new years resolution for 2012 is to plan ahead a lot more.
Love the categories to help you decide. I never completely meet my resolutions, but always set them anyway. Voted up.
Princess! I very much like your suggestion of forgetting the cliche resolutions since we tend to do that soon enough anyway and to start with real resolutions that matter. Time with family, stop fighting with people you love, stop complaining and count blessings instead - improvement in any of these areas can be pivotal. Bringing goals like these to people's minds is a good thing!
So, THANKS!
This is a great hub, very insightful! I particularly liked the parts about quitting procrastination and smoking. In the procrastination section, you ask "But what do these fancy words 'effective' and 'efficient' mean when it comes to real life scenarios? How are you going to actually stop wasting time?" I like the fact that you are asking readers to get down to the nitty-gritty and concrete. As a teacher, this is exactly how I parsed tasks and skills for my high school students. We all need more concreteness in our lives!
Thank you, princesswithapen!
