Disadvantages of being a content writer and choosing content writing as your career
70
Content writer, or Content writing has its advantages and disadvantages like any other profession and career choice Content writing is a full time career and the entire online industry survives on the work of skilled content writers who write content for websites, articles and blogs. Surely, you've come across many articles about How to earn money from writing online and becoming a content writer. For a change, take a look at the disadvantages of being a content writer.
Content writing is not a glamorous job.
You will not become a star or become a celebrity. If you are fond of being in the limelight, being a content writer is not your cup of tea.
Content writing is not easy.
If you think you can simply start earning money by typing away on the keyboard, I suggest you reconsider you chances of becoming a successful content writer. Writing quality content requires tedious effort of making sure that you content is free of errors. You will have to check and re-check the content that you write for your clients. Mistakes will make you look like an amateur. I have not even started telling you about the intricacies of the content requirements of unique clients. I don't want to make content writing look like rocket science. Well, at not here.
Content writing will not make you rich overnight.
Becoming a content writer or a publisher even on websites like HubPages, Squidoo or Wizzley is not going to spin your Google Adsense account overnight. Although publishing on these websites is not exactly what you call content writing, but you often see many content writers trying a hand at writing and publishing just about anything under the sun day in and out on these platforms. From firsthand experience, allow me to be the party spoiler, you will not become rich overnight.
Content writing is not a profession that will pay you to travel.
It is a different thing if you choose to travel on your own and work as a content writer while travelling, but no one will reimburse your expenses. Unlike the job of an executive banker or a sales person who is paid to travel across the country, or even the world to make business deals, you are confined to your sweet home.
Content writing is not equal to being an entrepreneur.
Many people mistake the profession of being a content writer to that of being an entrepreneur. Nope, not true folks. Okay, it's a different scenario if you have your own website or blog and start publishing articles for your own profit, like I'm right now. Or if you have your own content writing services where you hire content writers to work for you. That's a different story. But if you think you've become a businessman or a business woman by simply giving page after page of content to random websites, I advise you splash some water on your face to wake up and smell the coffee.
A good content writing contract is not easy to get.
Unfortunately, because online community is awash with not-so-good content writers who bring down the quality of content published on the internet. So the competition is tough and you'll need to stand out from the crowd by patiently hanging in there until someone notices the high quality of your content and your writing skills.
There are no magical results when it comes to content writing.
Yes, Search Result Optimization helps. I am not going to deny that. Yes, use of appropriate keywords helps. I am not going to deny that either. But believe me folks, if you are a content writer and are promising your client overnight magical traffic by your SEO or keyword skills, stop. You and I both know that's not true.
Content writing can be a monotonous job.
I'm sorry to burst the bubble, ladies and gentlemen, but content writing can sometimes be a very dull and boring job. Can you imagine being asked to write 3 pages about a dull topic? You'd need some seriously strong coffee to survive through the ordeal.
Content writing confines you to a desk and a computer.
If you become a content writer, your work life will revolve around your office desk and your computer. All the interaction that you have with your clients will be over email and phone. I guess most businesses work like that these days. But content writing does really take this to another level.
You are a what?
Is what most people will ask you when you tell them that you are a content writer. Content writing as a profession has not, yet, entered the mainstream. Be prepared to cop some flak from friends and foes about your job as a content writer. The only way to shut them up is to show them the money! So better be armed to the teeth, prepared to work like a horse and make some serious money.

I like this hub. Yes, I am writer but not totally a content writer as I have my blogs which I am utilizing for my articles. If I needed money asap, only then that I search for content writing job. I agree, writing is such a tough job, this is I am now jumping to the next level. am now on the process of writing an ebook, which I believe will be advantageous on my part.
Voted you up dude. Nice one.
Oh, yes, writing of any kind is often not seen as a real job by friends and family until you can actually pay your bills. And to do that, you have to write a book that sells a lot of copies or work as a journalist at a newspaper in the past before newspaper started to disappear. I'm from an artistic family, so no one is surprised that I write, but I still don't pay bills with writing.
princesswithapen, now you tell me :) Many people arrive at the Hubpages site for one reason and stay for other reasons. Many that were here when I arrived are gone now.
Princesswithapen, your hub is very helpful to so many who haven't taken the time to really look at the disadvantagesof content writing. It is so true that making money this way is far from easy. I have always believed that a person should do something in life that they really enjoy. You should be very passionate about what you do. Well, I guess that is easy for a retiree to say, but I loved being an educator and an administrator for many years. Now I am pretty passionate about retirement. Thanks for your excellent insight and for sharing it with others. Voted up, useful, and interesting.
Good points on content writing. I do conciser myself a content writer for writing on Hubpages. The articles are mine, owned by me, and of course hosted by Hubpages. If I can make a hub here be successful I can make any writing under the sun somewhere else be successful so its the same type of training. While writing real content for sites being paid by word or page is what more people think is a "content writer" I still think blogs and sites like Hubpages, Squidoo etc are the same thing but your paid on "commission" aka if you can get traffic and clicks or not.
Its also not true about being paid to travel and write. Some places need content writers to go to events first hand and pay for the best ones to do just that. Say its an Anime Convention site. Say there is one currently in California. While im in Massachusetts and I own the site, I might pay a content writer living in Cali to go to the event and take pictures+write about it in detail for my site. Thats still paying them for the content and paying for there admittance.

I agree writing does not pay us over night. We have to work hard to get decent earnings. I don't earn my livelihood from writing despite writing for more than eight years. This is very useful and inspiring hub.
Can you tell me a genuine website that pays for content writing. It will be helpful for me.Thank you.
