Why are cats cute?
Cats have a cuteness of a different kind. They show affection through their large green eyes, they depict playfulness by chasing laser lights and toy spiders and they become a part of your home (read: furniture) by lying on their backs with their legs perched up in the air. If you have the sensitivity to appreciate this subtle cute quotient of felines, read on to know why cats are cute and what makes them the most adorable creatures in the world.
Cats are cute because
1) Cats are independent and spiritually detached
Why is independence always confused with arrogance and coldness? Cats are great pets to have because they are not a liability in terms of care taking. They poop where they have to and the sleep when they are bored (read: always!) and they eat when they feel like. They don't necessarily come up to you with hungry eyes and paws you until you are forced to get up and feed them.
2) Cats love their siestas
You can't play with cats anytime you want to. They have a certain mood and time cycle you must adhere to. Would you like it if someone stormed into your office and coerced you into playing Scrabble with them? Definitely not! Then how dare you disturb the feline creature from its slumber?
3) Cats express their displeasure gracefully
Are the cat food nuggets sour? Is the scratching post not rough enough? Is the bed too fluffy? You cat will give you instant signals about their liking towards the amenities that you have supplied them. If the stuff is not good enough, you will be met with raging fury and intense annoyance with a titled head and a long, loud Meow. Awww. Cuteness.
4) Cats can be easily kept busy for hours
Apart from balls of wool in which cute cats can get tangled and never come out, cats can be easily kept busy for hours with an iPad, for example. Believe it or not, there are YouTube videos of cats doodling away with their paws on iPad screens, being highly amused with the colors. And if you don't want to put up an iPad up for sacrifice for you feline, a simple moth in the room should suffice! However don't take it for granted that a cat will simply be amused by anything and everything. If and only if, Her Feline Highness feels like being amused, will the games begin. Are we still wondering why are cats cute?
5) Cats use different tones of 'Meow's to manipulate you
Whether cats want you to buzz off, entertain them, give them food or show them TV, they have a specific way of Meowing for each activity. A slow, lulled meow for wanting you to pet them under their necks, a short purr to let you know they are impressed and a loud, uninterrupted continuous meow to ask you to 'get the hell out of here!' It is difficult to think of anything cuter than this. In fact, there should be a research lab out there somewhere trying to decipher the different Meows and make it a mainstream language.
6) Cats love being carried like a human baby
Do you find babies cute? If you do, you will find cats uber cute too. Unlike general assumption, cats love being carried, especially when you cradle them like babies. With their legs perched up half in the air, they loved being lulled and hummed to sleep. And mind you, if they notice you're wearing amusing danglers of a neckpiece that catches their fancy, they have the official right to fling it apart.
7) Cats own you and not vice versa
And you thought that you'd allot a corner to your pet cat and that's it? Sorry, not happening! Cats are super cute because they will eventually pick the spot that they love in the house. Also, if you've seen your cat rubbing against your legs in front of others, don't mistake it as a sign of affection. Veterinary experts have suggested that it's the cat's way of indicating to other human beings and livings organisms that they own you!
8) Cats think they're cleaner than you
Have you noticed every time you pet and play with your cat, he/she will sit a corner a few minutes later and get into a self grooming session? And by the time they finish licking every single square inch of their body, an hour would have passed. How cute is that – no shampoo expenses, no trips to the vet! It's almost like they're trying to tell you "Get your dirty hands off me"
9) Cats are extremely curious
'Curiosity killed the cat' comes from a context. Cat owners will agree to this. When you come back from the grocery store and put all your shopping bags on the kitchen counter, the first person to check it out will be your kitty. She/he will hop on the counter, open the bag wide with the paw and sniff until they are satisfied. If you are thinking "why cats are cute if they go through a bag of groceries?" It is because once you empty all the cartons, they'll get into one of them and sit in it for some time!
10) Cats have a cute yet difficult personality
'Cute yet difficult' is a confusing tag to describe a personality, but here goes. Cats won't go salivating after just about anything that's offered to them. They have strong likes and dislikes, fetishes, pet peeves and most importantly, their favourite people. For instance, if they lightly bite you, it's their way of acknowledging that you exist. No surprises that images of Cleopatra are often depicting her stroking a Siamese cat. Both have personalities, you see.
Other miscellaneous reasons why cats are so cute.
- They will paw the fish inside the fish bowl
- They will keep going in circles chasing their own tails
- Cats will curl up nowhere else but at you feet
- If you take your cat to a new house, he/she will smell and physically check out every nook and corner of the house.
- Cats like the feeling of warmth underneath them we always seem to find them stationed atop a computer monitor
- Since cats are fascinated by motion, they'll try to paw your fast moving fingers zipping across the keyboard
- Cats will sit on your best couch and furnishing as if it were their own and since they look so cute sitting there rightfully, you wouldn't have the heart to shoo them off

Lovely hub about my favourite animals, one of which just happens to be snoozing in my lap as I write... :)
I love that you "warn" us about the cute cat pictures. Some cats don't mind being picked up while others can't stand it. We had a cat for 16 years when I was growing up who hated being picked up unless she was sick. It was always a bad sign when she didn't struggle. I love this pictures. Amy does indeed have a variety of meows.
cute cats! my cat doesn't like to be picked up though..
Great pictures. We JUST got a kitten about a week ago for many of the reasons you mentioned. It is black and white and my kids are having a blast with him. They named him Charlie Raisin. Thanks for sharing such a cute hub.
Such a great hub! Any cat lover will appreciate this. Thanks for including so many beautiful photos.
Totally cute cat photographs! I'm a cat lover, so I guess an easy reader/commentator. I think you are right that what makes them so endearing is their feigned indifference. :)
Thanks Princess, he already is bringing great joy to us! I tried to post pics here but there isn't a link to be able to so I posted them in the Sandpit under Last one to post. Check them out if you get a chance!
I can't understand why some people don't care for cats - maybe your Hub will "convert" a few! Voted up and beautiful because there's not a "cute" button ;)
We have a blue point male Siamese and we are quite pleased with him. I don't think of him as cute as much as I think of him as friendly and other times as annoying when he is walking underfoot.
Cats, cats, cats. It always surprises me to meet a dog person who doesn't like cats! I like both, but I prefer cats. I have four and they are all different and you described their eccentric traits and personalities so well. Fun Hub.
I love cats and have voted up!
One of my cats looked at the screen and said MREEOOW. Since she isn't one of the talkers, I assume that this means she approves.
And no, if you try to carry part of our cats like babies, they start wriggling and want down. Especially our Himalayans and Persians. They do not like to be held.
They do like to help me type, though.
It's the slight air of unattainability that does it. No one wants to date the eager girl who is always throwing herself at everyone (dogs). They want the cute girl they think they can't have. My cats make me earn their attention. I tried to have a dog once for a week and it was like having a clingy, whiny baby. No matter what/who the pet - you have to be able to WALK AWAY.
Even in a human relationship, you are always more wellrounded, healthy individuals when you have your own lives/interests & don't always have to do everything TOGETHER all the time.
